Our Honey Story

One of my earliest encounters with a bee colony was at my grandfather’s work shed. A swarm had made their home near the old outdoor faucet, right where we’d drink from the hose to cool off during hot Alabama summers. We’d spend our days playing in the yard, picking pecans, and watching hundreds of bees buzz out from a small hole in the wall. I was both afraid and fascinated.

One summer day, a single honey bee landed on my sunflower-patterned shirt. My little brother screamed, but I calmly said, “If you don’t bother it, it won’t bother you.” Even then, something inside me felt connected to them. Though my grandfather tried to keep the bees away, they always returned resilient, determined, and drawn to that space just like I was. From that moment, I knew I wanted to learn more about them. But growing up, I didn’t think my parents would go for it, so I tucked that dream away.

Then in 2008, I watched The Secret Life of Bees—starring Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Dakota Fanning, Finney, and Sophie Okonedo. I was in awe. Their world of beekeeping, sisterhood, and strength stirred something deep within me. I remember saying to myself, “If I ever buy land, I’m going to purchase some bees.” Years passed, but that quiet promise stayed with me.

In the fall of 2019, I found myself at the county fair, where I stumbled upon a beekeeping booth offering intro classes. I signed up on the spot. That’s where I met my mentor, Mr. Dale—and that’s where my journey truly began.

Today, beekeeping has become more than a hobby. It’s a calling, a connection to nature, and a way to share the sweetness of life—one jar at a time. 💛🍯🐝
