The Royal Switcheroo: Queens Aren’t Forever

When people think of queen bees, they imagine lifelong rulers reigning over their colonies with unwavering control. But here’s a surprising fact: beekeepers regularly replace queen bees even when they’re healthy.

Why Would You Replace a Queen?

Queens typically live up to 3–5 years, but most commercial beekeepers replace them every 1–2 years. That’s because younger queens are more productive egg-layers and release stronger pheromones that stabilize hive behavior.

Requeening for Hive Health

Beekeepers also requeen hives to improve genetics, control aggression, or prevent swarming. A hive with a gentle, high-producing queen is easier to manage and produces more honey.

Fun Fact:

Bees can tell if their queen is failing. If she stops laying properly or produces weak pheromones, the colony will start raising a replacement on their own. Beekeepers just get ahead of the curve.
